Chapter 8 - Hunter

I mentally slap myself for asking Anna out on a date, but every sinew in my body has wanted this for the longest time. As friends, we spent hours together, talking and sitting in the same room, doing our own thing. But the thing about texting is that it enabled us to explore the tension between us that neither of us can deny. Just thinking about her makes me explode. The number of times my hands have ached to reach for her soft hair… I just couldn’t stop myself this time.

In one of her messages, Anna told me about the birthday present she gave Eliot which gave me the perfect idea for our date. We’re going to a live jazz bar tonight; a violinist who has performed at Carnegie Hall will be performing there. I thought Anna would appreciate it.

I survey my reflection in the mirror from head to toe. From my cleanly shaven face to the spotless white shirt, I could swear I have never looked cleaner. For all the times I made Anna clean my wounds, bloody and smeared with dirt, I think it’s time she finally sees me in a neat outfit, looking half alive for once. Like I can take care of myself. Like I can take care of her if the need arises.

I run a hand through my hair when a pang of guilt makes my forehead crease. But before I can dwell on the thought, I grab my car keys and make my way to the village.

I reach it in a little over an hour despite the usual traffic while trying my best not to lose my temper over the frustration of waiting at red lights.

Once I reach her house, I text Anna that I have arrived. I don’t honk because I don’t want Eliot to know that I’m standing outside his house waiting to take Anna on a date. I know it’s silly because he obviously knows already, but I somehow find the thought of seeing him embarrassing.

My wish is not granted because Eliot stands on the porch as Anna walks out of the house and makes her way to my car. I’m surprised to find that I feel no embarrassment, though. My eyes are glued on Anna who is looking more beautiful than I’ve ever seen her look.

“Have a good time,” Eliot shouts so the whole neighborhood can hear, and while I drive away, both Anna and I crouch a little in our seats to avoid catching the attention of anyone.

I quickly pull out of the driveway and within a few minutes, we’re on the nearest highway whizzing past other cars. Anna and I fight over what to listen to on the radio the entire drive. She prefers rock and roll like she always did, and I can’t stand her music taste. It was an old joke between us that music would end up separating us. After a lot of back and forth, I finally let Anna be the DJ.
